People often ask me this question, so I will attempt to answer it clearly. Sometimes I answer with, “I’ve been painting all day” but I know this does not answer anything. I guess I am a bit vague because going into it requires some thought and time and it’s kind of like answering the question, “How are you?”
Since last September I’ve been developing a creative practice and recording it. I began with research, and the brief was vague. “Go and research anything that you are attracted to, that catches your eye.” I look to galleries, museums, sidewalks, forests, skies and anywhere else, to find interesting things. The research is ongoing.
Right now I am drawing patterns and making marks on paper. I will eventually scan these into a computer and manipulate and combine elements to make a design that will eventually be printed onto fabric. After this, the fabric will be made up into clothing.
I also keep a journal called The Log. I try to write my daily thoughts and actions to keep a record of my creative process. With frequent analysis and editing, I can see how my ideas are forming and the patterns that I carry with me. It is very helpful in getting me to understand why I create and where I might be going.
